I do not like to fight, disagree, or venture into the critical morass that sometimes sucks me down and drags me through the slime. But...how can I keep silent? I have read far too much on diet and how it truly does impact one's life. Yet, on a far too consistent basis, we give kids about the worst food for their systems that is possible. Why? Because it's easy.
Now I am a 60-year-old grandparent. I am endeavoring myself not to buy into the quick fix. The easy reward. I made one of my wonderful frozen ice creams from frozen fruit (nothing like my single auger juicer) yesterday for my granddaughter. She loved it. At this point in her life, she is not addicted to sugar (as I am) and is happy with real flavors.
Yet, I have to go back to this fight.
It has become a struggle to protect kids in a way though they don't feel they need protecting. I am, however, far too aware of the health statistics that support my observations. So I fight. If you tell me that a kid needs ADHD medication, I question if we have invested time tweaking his/her diet. If not, why not? Or, why not support this as a school? Or why not model this as a school? We don't.
It gets old...gets tiring, fighting what seems to be so obvious. We are machines. We deserve the best fuels around.
