Dear Tree: The Final Piece
Dear Tree
The final piece was just pulled
From my lawn
Pulled and drifting now
Away from my memory
You
Were a hundred and twenty feet tall
You towered
Hovered
Awed us
But you leaned
Leaned toward my neighbor's home
Your sap was coming forth
At your trunk
The signs were there
A few days ago
The wind blew violently
I thought that perhaps
Perhaps
You were once again
Strong enough to weather any storm
Any wind
I truly think
That you had many years left
I uprooted you far too early
Yet my sense of safety
Of trying to keep those around me
Alive forever
Took over, and you were my sacrifice
As I watched
Your last piece loaded onto Tim's truck
I gave thanks to you
I give thanks to you.
